MoneyWika earns a commission if you buy through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How we make money
TruthScan is worth trying if you need to know whether a photo, screenshot, receipt or PDF was made or edited with AI. It suits small teams that review claims, refunds or ID documents, and anyone sent "proof" they don't trust.
The free plan includes 25 checks a month. Paid plans start at $24 a month billed yearly, or $29 month to month, for 1,000 checks.
Two cautions before you rely on it. Its accuracy figures are TruthScan's own, and it keeps your uploads by default. Zero data retention is a setting you can turn on only from the Business plan up.

How we reviewed TruthScan: on October 24, 2026, we checked its pricing, product pages, FAQ and terms, plus G2 reviews and one outside test. I've also used it myself on fake message and email screenshots someone sent me, and it flagged them as likely AI. We didn't run a separate benchmark, so accuracy figures are TruthScan's own unless stated (see how we review software).

What TruthScan does
TruthScan checks images and PDFs for signs that AI made or changed them. You can upload a file or paste an image link, and paid plans add bulk ZIP uploads.
Every result includes a probability score, a classification, a confidence score, written reasoning and a heatmap, at no extra cost (source). The heatmap marks the parts of an image that look generated or edited.
TruthScan says it supports 500+ image generators (source). Its detector page names ChatGPT's GPT Image, Google's Nano Banana, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and Flux among them.

The features that matter
- Edits inside real photos. TruthScan says it analyzes images region by region, so a swapped face or changed digit isn't averaged away. For tiny edits, it suggests cropping to the area and scanning again.
- Receipts and PDFs. Its receipt checker accepts receipts and invoices as images or PDFs. Its PDF detector, still in beta, checks bank statements, pay stubs and tax forms, then rates each one Genuine, Suspicious or Flagged.
- Chrome extension. Right-click an image on any web page to scan it. The extension is free, but it needs a free TruthScan account (source).
- Bulk uploads and API. Paid plans add batch uploads; TruthScan suggests ZIPs of 500 images or fewer, each image taking about one to two seconds. Every plan includes API access, the free one too.
- Capture (beta). When a genuine photo gets flagged, you can send the person a link to retake it live on their device. It's available on request during the beta.
- One shared account. Plans are per organization with no seat fees, so your whole team draws from one monthly pool. G2 lists Zapier and Zendesk integrations.
TruthScan also lists detectors for AI text, voice and video, but its pricing page covers images and PDF pages only. Our reviews of ElevenLabs, an AI voice generator, and MagicLight AI, a story-to-video tool, show what those detectors are up against.
If you need to check writing, TruthScan says its text detector flags paraphrased and "humanized" AI text, though we haven't seen it tested. Students worried about that can read our Paperpal review, which covers using AI safely in academic papers.
TruthScan pricing in 2026
TruthScan charges per result: one image or one PDF page. A 12-page PDF uses 12 results, and unused results don't roll over to the next month.
Prices below were checked on October 24, 2026, so confirm them on TruthScan's site before you buy. TruthScan's FAQ says paid plans are month to month and you can switch tiers at any time. Yearly billing is paid up front.
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Results a month | Each extra result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 25 | None; upgrade for more |
| Starter | $24 a month ($290 a year) | $29 | 1,000 | $0.03 |
| Professional | $83 a month ($990 a year) | $99 | 5,000 | $0.02 |
| Business | $333 a month ($3,990 a year) | $399 | 40,000 | $0.01 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | $0.005 or less |

Yearly billing gives you two months free, about 17% off. TruthScan's FAQ says annual prepay saves 20%, but its listed prices work out to about 17%.
Going over your allowance on a paid plan doesn't stop the service. Extra results are billed at your plan's rate, and the dashboard shows a running total once you pass 80% of your quota.
Business adds zero data retention, a data processing agreement (DPA) on request and priority support. Enterprise adds EU or UK processing, custom contracts and on-premises deployment.

Which plan fits
At 1,500 checks a month, Starter costs $44 on monthly billing: $29 plus 500 extra results at $0.03 each. On monthly billing, Professional only becomes the cheaper plan above about 3,330 checks a month, or about 2,950 on yearly billing.
Count PDF pages, not files. Checking 20 five-page bank statements a day uses about 2,000 results over 20 working days.
Test it on your own files. The free plan includes 25 checks a month, and you don't need a card to start.
Start freeHow accurate is TruthScan?
TruthScan reports 99.3% average accuracy across 92 image generators and 250,000 real images. It puts its false positive rate, where a real image gets flagged as fake, under 1% (source).
By category, it lists 99.3% for receipts, 98.1% for invoices and 99.9% for chats. For recent models, it lists 99.9% for Imagen 4, 99.2% for GPT-Image 1.5 and 98.6% for Midjourney.

These are TruthScan's own numbers, and we couldn't find a large independent benchmark that includes it. One outside test quoted on its site, a Gold Penguin post, ran seven DALL-E images. TruthScan flagged all seven with an average score of 96.71%, but the post tested no real photos (source).
Image quality matters too. TruthScan's FAQ warns that heavy degradation, such as "a screenshot of a screenshot," loses detail no detector can recover. In my G2 review, I noted that it struggles slightly with blurry images.
What happens to your uploads
Uploads are kept by default. Without zero data retention, TruthScan's terms let it use aggregated, anonymized or de-identified data to train and improve its products. Those terms were last updated on August 27, 2026.
Zero data retention is an option you switch on in your account settings, from the Business plan up ($333 a month billed yearly). With it, TruthScan says files are discarded once the check is done and never used for training.
TruthScan's pricing page shows SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 badges, and its trust center lists both as compliant. Even so, think twice before uploading customers' IDs or bank statements on a cheaper plan.
Who runs TruthScan
TruthScan's terms name the company as Undetectable Inc., doing business as TruthScan. Its CEO, Christian Perry, co-founded Undetectable.ai, a tool that detects AI-written text and can also rewrite it (team page, Wikipedia).
Its COO, Benjamin Miller, previously worked in fraud prevention at the US Department of State. In September 2026, the Global Anti-Scam Alliance announced it is adding TruthScan's deepfake detection to scam.org (announcement). Visitors will be able to upload an image to check whether it is real, edited or AI-made.

TruthScan pros and cons
Pros
- Free plan with 25 checks a month and API access, no card needed
- Reports explain each score with written reasoning and a heatmap
- Checks receipts and PDFs as well as photos
- Looks for edits inside real photos, not only fully AI-made images
- No seat fees, so a whole team can share one account
- Month-to-month plans you can change at any time
Cons
- Accuracy figures come from TruthScan; we found no large independent test
- Uploads are kept by default; zero data retention needs Business or above ($333 a month billed yearly)
- Blurry or heavily compressed images are harder to judge
- Each PDF page counts as a result, so long statements add up
- You need an account even for a single check
- The PDF detector and Capture are still in beta
Who should skip TruthScan
- You need an expert opinion for court. A detector's score can support a qualified examiner's review, but it shouldn't replace one.
- You handle sensitive customer files on a small budget. Zero data retention is only available from the Business plan, at $333 a month billed yearly.
- You mostly check writing. The self-serve plans cover images and PDF pages, so ask TruthScan about text pricing first.
- You only check the odd viral image. Free tools, such as Hive's Chrome extension below, may be all you need.
TruthScan alternatives
We haven't reviewed these three yet, so the details below come from their own websites, checked on October 24, 2026.
| Tool | Free option | Paid plans | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| TruthScan | 25 checks a month | From $24 a month billed yearly, for 1,000 checks | Photos, receipts and PDFs |
| Sightengine | 2,000 operations a month (500 a day at most) | From $29 a month for 10,000 operations | Developers adding checks to an app |
| AI or Not | 20 image checks, plus 1M words of text checks a month | Pro is $5 a month with $10 of credits, or 500 image checks | Occasional checks across images, voice and video |
| Hive | Free web tool and Chrome extension | API through Hive's sales team | Quick checks while browsing |
Sources: Sightengine pricing, AI or Not pricing, Hive AI-generated content detection.
Sightengine is built for developers who add checks to an app through its API. Its free tier covers 2,000 operations a month, and Pro costs $99 a month for 40,000.
AI or Not checks images, video, voice and text with one pool of credits. On monthly plans, unused credits roll over while the plan stays active.
Hive offers a free web tool, Hive Detect, and a free Chrome extension that scans images, video and audio. The extension also suggests which AI model likely made a file.
Pick TruthScan if receipts and PDFs are your main worry, since the pages we checked for the other three don't list PDF document checks. For occasional checks, Sightengine's free tier goes further than TruthScan's 25 free checks, if you can use an API. Hive's page lists no usage limits for its free tools.
Our verdict: worth it for teams that judge photos and documents
TruthScan is a good pick for small teams that review photos, receipts and documents as part of the job. Think claims, refunds, marketplace listings and customer onboarding. Its reports explain why a file looks fake, which helps when you must justify a decision.
Start on the free plan and run files you already know are real or AI-made. If the results hold up, Starter covers 1,000 checks for $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly.
Keep two limits in mind: the accuracy numbers are TruthScan's own, and only Business and Enterprise plans can stop it keeping uploads. For the occasional check, a free tool may be all you need.
TruthScan FAQ
Is TruthScan free?
Yes. The free plan includes 25 results a month, with no credit card and no time limit. You sign in with Google or email to use it.
How accurate is TruthScan?
TruthScan reports 99.3% average accuracy across 92 image generators and a false positive rate under 1%. Those are its own figures, and we found no large independent test that includes it.
Can TruthScan spot fake receipts and bank statements?
It accepts receipts as images or PDFs, and its PDF detector, in beta, checks statements, pay stubs and tax forms. Each PDF page counts as one result.
Does TruthScan store my images?
Yes, by default. On Business ($333 a month billed yearly) and above, you can switch on zero data retention, which discards files after each check.
Does TruthScan have an API?
Yes. Every plan includes API access, including the free plan, and every plan includes the Chrome extension.
Can TruthScan check screenshots?
Yes, it accepts screenshots as images, and I've used it on screenshots of messages and emails. Heavily recompressed files, such as a screenshot of a screenshot, lose detail, so scan the original file when you can.
Is TruthScan legit?
Yes: TruthScan is run by Undetectable Inc., and its pricing page shows SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 badges. It has a 4.9 rating on G2 from 17 reviews, one of them mine. Its accuracy figures are its own, so test it on files you already know before you rely on it.
